Kansas City, Missouri — The Kansas City Chiefs are experiencing a rare moment in the NFL where they are not only getting healthier but also potentially bolstering their roster as the season moves forward.

One significant enhancement for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions may arrive this Sunday, as the Chiefs are optimistic about the return of running back Isiah Pacheco and defensive end Charles Omenihu for their matchup against Carolina. Last week, both players participated in scout team activities without any issues, increasing the likelihood that they will be activated for this upcoming game.

“On both of those players, we’ll evaluate them after practice and monitor their progress throughout this week,” Head Coach Andy Reid noted on Wednesday before the team’s practice session. “It will depend on how things go.”

Pacheco has been sidelined since Week 2 due to an ankle injury that necessitated surgery. Following his injury, the Chiefs swiftly signed Kareem Hunt, who has seamlessly stepped in during Pacheco’s recovery, providing solid performances in the process. The potential availability of both players would create a dynamic offensive duo, given their contrasting playing styles.

Hunt is recognized as a tough, between-the-tackles runner who has consistently carried the ball over 14 times in each game, including multiple outings where he exceeded 100 rushing yards. In comparison, Pacheco is known for his speed and explosive running style, which could result in significant yardage gains—something the Chiefs desperately need to reinvigorate their offensive play. Pacheco’s vibrant spirit and enthusiasm offer a stark contrast to Hunt’s more subdued demeanor, a quality the Chiefs are anxious to have back on the sidelines as well.

“He brings a lot of energy to the team, and it’s been great to see his efforts in getting back,” Reid said, adding that the coaching staff is mindful of his eagerness to return. “He would have been on the field three weeks ago if it had been solely up to him.”

Currently, the Chiefs hold a record of 9-1 despite experiencing a setback with a 31-20 loss in Buffalo. They are taking precautions to ensure Pacheco doesn’t rush back prematurely. “We might be the ones holding him back,” Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes explained. “He has a strong desire to contribute, but he also understands our larger objectives.”

Additionally, the Chiefs are optimistic that wide receiver Marquise Brown can join practice in December. After suffering a shoulder injury during the preseason, he underwent surgery that initially seemed to jeopardize his entire season. However, through dedicated rehabilitation, it’s likely he could be back in action for the postseason.

“He’s making great strides, and while I can’t provide a specific timeline, he’s eager to return,” Reid remarked, appreciating Brown’s hard work during recovery.

In light of Brown’s and Rashee Rice’s injuries, the Chiefs have been attempting to strengthen their wide receiver lineup. A highlight move was acquiring three-time All-Pro DeAndre Hopkins from Tennessee. However, general manager Brett Veach has also been active in seeking talent from waivers and practice squads to ensure added depth.

Recently, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton joined the practice squad after being released by the Patriots. Thornton was a second-round selection by New England in 2022, highlighted by an impressive 4.28-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. However, he faced challenges on the field, having only 39 receptions for 385 yards and two touchdowns over 28 games with 13 starts.

The Chiefs are hopeful that they can harness Thornton’s potential while providing Mahomes with another explosive option. “It’s a great opportunity for him here,” said Chiefs player JuJu Smith-Schuster, who previously played alongside Thornton in New England. “He’s young, hardworking, and eager to stretch the field. He’s excited about this chance to contribute.”
