Michigan hunters suffer fatal heart attacks while carrying large deer.

BAY CITY, Mich. — During the ongoing 16-day deer hunting season in Michigan, at least three hunters have tragically passed away from heart attacks, with two of the individuals succumbing while attempting to drag the heavy animals, according to local officials.

“It’s unprecedented to witness three fatalities due to heart attacks within the span of just 48 hours while deer hunting,” noted Dr. William Morrone, a medical examiner overseeing several counties including Bay, Midland, Tuscola, Arenac, and Iosco. This alarming trend has raised concerns within the community about the physical demands of the hunting season.

Dr. Morrone emphasized the need for hunters to adequately prepare themselves for the challenges that come with spending time outdoors. “With deer season arriving, many hunters grab their rifles and backpacks and set off into the woods without proper conditioning,” he stated.

The individuals who died were men aged 57, 65, and 83, and their fatalities occurred in Arenac and Tuscola counties. While these deaths are unfortunate, they represent only a small fraction of the many hunters partaking in the season, which commenced on November 15.

Morrone has called for the Department of Natural Resources to consider requiring hunters to provide proof of their physical fitness. He believes that initiatives aimed at encouraging healthier diets and increased physical activity, along with regular health checks, could be beneficial. “Deer hunting is a significant tradition in Michigan, but it also places considerable physical strain on the body,” he added.
