LONDON — For sports enthusiasts, a unique opportunity has arisen: Metal lockers that were once utilized by some of soccer’s most renowned players are now available for bidding.

Sotheby’s is putting up for auction 24 lockers from the Real Madrid changing room, which were in use from 2002 to 2022 before being dismantled during renovations at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

These lockers were displayed for the public at Sotheby’s London auction house starting Wednesday.

Each locker, once belonging to legendary athletes such as Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Sergio Ramos, and Luís Figo, is being auctioned off separately, with starting bids set at 10,000 pounds (approximately $12,600).

Potential buyers can engage in online bidding until November 26 as part of an auction that combines efforts between Sotheby’s and Pursuit 3 Marketing Group, the official memorabilia partner of Real Madrid.

Sotheby’s has announced that a portion of the proceeds from the auction will benefit the Real Madrid Foundation, a charitable initiative associated with the club.

Brendan Hawkes, a specialist in sports and modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, expressed excitement about presenting these significant items to the public, noting it offers a rare look into the famed Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and one of soccer’s most illustrious clubs.

This auction underscores the growing trend in sports memorabilia, which is evolving beyond the usual collectibles like jerseys and balls. Just a few months prior, Sotheby’s auctioned Kobe Bryant’s locker from the Staples Center in Los Angeles for an impressive $2.9 million.

Currently, the highest price ever recorded for a sports memorabilia item belongs to the jersey worn by Babe Ruth during the iconic “called shot” in the 1932 World Series. This legendary jersey was sold for a staggering $24.12 million at Heritage Auctions in Dallas earlier this August.
