Prague — On Wednesday, the Czech Defense Ministry announced intentions to procure 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks from Germany, a deal estimated at $167 million. This acquisition is part of a broader initiative to modernize the military, particularly in the context of ongoing tensions due to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
The ministry indicated that they expect to finalize the agreement with Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH by the end of the year, targeting delivery of the tanks by the close of 2026. In a prior arrangement, Germany also contributed 28 Leopard 2A4 tanks to the Czech Republic, in return for military equipment previously sent to Ukraine. The incoming Leopard tanks are set to replace outdated Soviet-made T-72 models currently in the Czech arsenal.
Defense Minister Jana ?ernochová expressed that the procurement is a crucial step forward in updating both the tank forces and the overall military capabilities of the country. “We are advancing in modernizing our tank units along with the entire army,” she said, emphasizing the need to phase out old Russian weaponry and enhance their defense effectiveness.
Earlier this year, the Czech government also sanctioned a partnership to acquire up to 77 Leopard 2A8 tanks, collaborating with other nations led by Germany. The Leopard 2A8 represents the latest advancements in tank technology, whereas the 2A4 is an earlier iteration.
In addition, last year saw the approval of a plan for procuring 24 U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets and 246 CV90 armored combat vehicles from Sweden, reflecting a comprehensive commitment to strengthen and modernize Czech military capabilities.
