DAMASCUS — According to the state-operated media in Syria, an assault on the historic town of Palmyra resulted in the deaths of 36 individuals and left over 50 others injured on Wednesday. The Syrian government attributed this attack to Israel.
In response to the incident, the Israeli military opted not to provide any comments.
The state news agency, SANA, reported that the airstrikes caused “significant material damage” to both the targeted structures and the surrounding environment. Palmyra is renowned for its ancient Roman temple complex that draws many visitors.
Israel routinely conducts operations against military installations and facilities connected to Iranian-affiliated groups within Syria, although it seldom acknowledges its involvement in such attacks. The casualty figure from Wednesday’s incident is notably high for these types of strikes. Currently, there is no information indicating whether the ancient ruins sustained any damages.
