Professional Fighters League partners with Dubai to host MMA events

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The Professional Fighters League (PFL) is planning to broaden its reach by hosting events in Dubai next year. This move marks an exciting new chapter for the league, known for its unique regular season and playoff structure in the mixed martial arts (MMA) arena.

In a strategic expansion, PFL also acquired Bellator in 2023 and will promote fighters from both organizations at the Champions Series World Title event slated for January 25, 2025, at the Coca-Cola Arena located in Dubai’s City Walk. The highlight of the event will see Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov defend his title against challenger Paul Hughes.

The PFL’s venture into the Middle East has been made possible through a collaboration with the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism along with the Dubai Sports Council. This partnership aims to not only host fights but also sign Emirati fighters, enhancing local talent participation in the sport.

The financial backing that facilitated PFL’s acquisition of Bellator includes investments from Saudi Arabia. Backed by SRJ Sports Investments, which has strong ties to the Saudi Public Investment Fund, the PFL secured a significant capital injection of $100 million. This funding is aimed at expanding mixed martial arts events in the Kingdom and beyond, reaffirming their commitment to growing the sport in the region.

This endeavor strategically positions PFL within the UFC’s territory, which has established a strong presence in Abu Dhabi. The investment from Saudi Arabia appears to be part of a broader plan to gain a foothold in the international sports sector while promoting a narrative of modernization and progressiveness, notably in regard to women’s rights.

The involvement of SRJ is influenced by Saudi Arabia’s broader ambitions in the sports world, following Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s initiative. The country has made significant investments, culminating in projects like the LIV Golf tour, which has attracted numerous top-tier athletes with lucrative signing bonuses.
