PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — On Wednesday, Cambodia’s National Assembly reached a unanimous decision to reappoint Prak Sokhonn as the nation’s foreign minister.
Prak Sokhonn, who serves as the first vice president of the Senate, brings a wealth of experience, having previously held the roles of deputy prime minister and foreign minister. He takes over from Sok Chenda Sophea, who remains in the position of deputy prime minister.
Following the decision, Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his congratulations to Prak Sokhonn through a message shared on his Telegram channel.
Hun Manet took office as prime minister last year, succeeding his father, Hun Sen, who had a long reign of nearly forty years in power. Despite this transition, there have been minimal indications of significant political reform or liberalization within the country.
Prak Sokhonn has had a notable political career, serving as deputy prime minister and foreign minister from 2016 until 2023 during Hun Sen’s administration. Prior to his cabinet roles, he represented Cambodia as an ambassador in various nations, showcasing his extensive diplomatic experience.
In a Cabinet reshuffle that occurred in September, other significant changes included the appointments of Sok Soken as inspection minister and Hout Hak as tourism minister, which involved a swapping of their positions.
During a graduation ceremony at a university in September, Hun Manet emphasized that the adjustments in his Cabinet are aimed at improving governance and fostering a collaborative environment among ministers, underlining the importance of teamwork in governmental operations.
