The Seattle Mariners made a strategic move on Tuesday by obtaining infielder Austin Shenton from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.
In tandem with this acquisition, the Mariners designated right-handed pitcher JT Chargois for assignment.
Austin Shenton, 26, made his debut in Major League Baseball on March 31 with the Rays, where he recorded a batting average of .214, alongside one home run and three runs batted in, across 19 games.
Prior to his promotion to the majors, Shenton showcased impressive offensive skills with the Triple-A Durham, where he achieved a batting average of .258, smacked 20 home runs, and drove in 65 runs over 83 games, posting an impressive .858 OPS.
On the other hand, Chargois, aged 33, had a solid run last season, compiling a record of 3-1 with a commendable 2.23 earned run average across 36 appearances with both Seattle and Miami.
It’s noteworthy that both Shenton and Chargois were previously traded to Tampa Bay from Seattle in a deal that included right-hander Diego Castillo back on July 29, 2021.
