IOWA CITY, Iowa — In an impressive display of skill, Payton Sandfort tallied 22 points and Owen Freeman contributed 19, leading Iowa to a confident 83-58 victory over Rider on Tuesday night. With this win, Iowa advances to a perfect 5-0 record for the season.
Payton Sandfort demonstrated his shooting prowess by going 9 for 16 from the field, while Freeman had an efficient night, hitting 7 of his 11 attempts. This performance marked the 20th time in Sandfort’s career that he has reached the 20-point milestone.
In addition to Sandfort and Freeman, Seydou Traore added 12 points and Pryce Sandfort contributed 11 for Iowa, which showcased a solid shooting performance with 30 field goals out of 64 attempts, equating to an efficiency rate of 47%. Iowa was notably effective in capitalizing on Rider’s mistakes, scoring 20 points off 20 turnovers by the opposing team.
The Sandfort brothers had a significant impact on the game, combining for five of Iowa’s eight successful three-point shots. This strong performance has positioned Payton and Pryce among the top four in the Big Ten Conference in three-point shooting.
From the outset, Iowa maintained a commanding presence, never surrendering the lead and entering halftime with a 40-26 advantage. Freeman was particularly noteworthy, scoring 12 points in the first half, while Payton Sandfort added another 11.
On the opposing side, Ife West-Ingram led Rider with 14 points, and Jay Alvarez supported him with 13 points as well. However, this marked the end of Rider’s three-game winning streak, dropping their record to 3-2.
As Iowa continues its winning streak, having secured each of its victories by a margin of at least ten points, the team is set to face Utah State next in Kansas City, Missouri, on Friday.
