San Francisco Mayor London Breed defeated in reelection bid by Levi Strauss descendant Daniel Lurie

SAN FRANCISCO — In a surprising turn of events, San Francisco Mayor London Breed has been defeated in her reelection bid by Daniel Lurie, the heir to the Levi Strauss legacy.
The announcement of Lurie’s victory came during the race’s declaration on Tuesday.

In her concession speech, the 50-year-old Breed expressed her commitment to ensuring a seamless transition for the newly elected mayor.
“Serving as Mayor of San Francisco has been the greatest honor of my life. I am truly thankful to our residents for allowing me the opportunity to serve the city that shaped me,” she stated last week.

Breed made history six years ago as the first Black female mayor of San Francisco, overcoming a challenging childhood spent in public housing to demonstrate that dreams could be achieved in this progressive and compassionate city.
She initially ascended to the mayoral office in June 2018, taking over the remainder of Ed Lee’s term following his unexpected death.

However, her term was quickly overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to widespread store closures and many tech employees working remotely.
Issues such as increasing tent encampments and rising public drug use emerged, with critics accusing her of insufficient and delayed responses to these challenges.

Despite some improvements this year, including cleaner streets and fewer visible homeless encampments, a highly publicized daytime shooting involving 49ers rookie Ricky Pearsall in a busy shopping area reignited discussions concerning public safety.
Breed’s reelection came in 2019, extending her term to five years after voters opted to align local election dates with the federal presidential election schedule.
