Boise State Takes Bye Instead of BYU in Latest College Football Playoff Rankings, Oregon Ranks First

Boise State has secured the fourth and final bye in the College Football Playoff rankings released on Tuesday night, which leaves BYU out of the playoff structure. This decision has also sparked complaints from the Big 12 Conference, which shares frustrations similar to those voiced by the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Undefeated Oregon has once again topped the rankings, a decision made by the committee shortly after Big Ten officials assessed scenarios and confirmed that the Ducks have locked in a spot in the conference championship game regardless of the outcomes leading up to December.

Ohio State retains the second position in the rankings, just ahead of Texas, which is currently tied for the lead in the SEC. The Atlantic Coast Conference’s Miami holds the eighth slot but is awarded the third seed and a bye due to being one of the top four ranked conference leaders. Similarly, although Boise State is ranked 12th by the committee, it has been strategically placed into the fourth and final bye position.

BYU is positioned at 14th but lands the final entry in the 12-team playoff bracket, earning the title of the fifth-best conference leader. This situation has resulted in No. 11 Tennessee being edged out, following their loss to Georgia last week, effectively making them the first team out of contention.

There are still three weeks of rankings ahead, which will lead up to the final reveal on December 8, when the field for college football’s inaugural 12-team playoff will be established.

Boise State’s ascension to a bye spot was somewhat anticipated, particularly after BYU experienced its first defeat of the season, which caused them to plunge eight spots in the rankings. Nonetheless, this has been a setback for supporters of the Big 12, as they might argue that every team in their conference possesses a tougher strength of schedule than that of the Mountain West’s Boise State.

The SEC continues to express discontent, especially after Georgia’s exclusion from the rankings last week following a significant loss to Mississippi. However, the Bulldogs have fought back to claim the 10th position now. Alabama stands at No. 7, while Ole Miss is at No. 9. Each of these teams, along with Tennessee, has faced two losses, but the strength of schedule from the SEC remains a focal point of discussion.

In addition to the top teams mentioned, other notable rankings include No. 4 Penn State, No. 5 Indiana, and No. 6 Notre Dame.
