CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs announced the release of former closer Adbert Alzolay on Tuesday, following his Tommy John surgery that took place at the end of the last season.
Alongside Alzolay, the Cubs also designated outfielder Brennen Davis for assignment. To fill these roster spots, the team promoted outfielder Owen Caissie from Triple-A Iowa and infielder Ben Cowles from Double-A Tennessee.
Alzolay, 29, underwent surgery on his right elbow in late August and is anticipated to be sidelined for a significant portion of the 2025 season. His performance in the early part of this year was hampered as he faced difficulties rehabilitating from the injury. During his time on the mound, Alzolay recorded four saves out of nine attempts and ended the season with a record of 1-4 along with a 4.67 ERA across 18 appearances.
In 2023, Alzolay was more effective, securing 22 saves out of 25 chances before his forearm issues arose on August 29. After that point, he made only five more appearances, concluding the season with a 2-5 record and a 2.67 ERA.
Brennen Davis was drafted by the Cubs in the second round of the 2018 amateur draft. Over the course of his minor league career, he has played in 347 games and boasts a batting average of .238, with 48 home runs and 165 RBIs.
