Vancouver, British Columbia — The Vancouver Canucks have announced that center J.T. Miller is stepping away from the team for personal reasons, with no specified timeline for his return. The organization’s general manager, Patrik Allvin, emphasized that the team is committed to providing support to Miller during this time.
Miller, 31, has recorded six goals and ten assists over 17 games this season, making him the second-highest scorer on the team, trailing behind captain Quinn Hughes, who has accumulated 18 points. Hughes expressed the significance of Miller’s presence in the team, recognizing him not only as a crucial player but also as a standout in the league. He acknowledged the impact of losing such a pivotal team member but also highlighted the depth and confidence within the squad. “We thought we had a contending team, and it’s not just one guy; it’s our whole group,” he stated.
Last season, Miller reached a career milestone with 103 points, which included 37 goals and 66 assists. The forward stands six-foot-one and weighs 218 pounds. He originated from East Palestine, Ohio, and was drafted 15th overall by the New York Rangers in 2011. Throughout his 13 seasons in the NHL, he has played for the Rangers, the Vancouver Canucks, and the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Teammate Elias Pettersson acknowledged the challenge of filling the gap left by Miller, wishing him well and reminding everyone of the organization’s unified support. “This is obviously a very big hole to fill, but we wish him well in his personal matter, and we’re here to support him, the whole organization,” Pettersson remarked.
Head coach Rick Tocchet also reflected on the courage of the team amid their current challenges and injury struggles. He noted the remarkable resilience shown despite various adversities, citing Dakota Joshua’s health issues among the many trials faced. Tocchet praised his players for maintaining a commendable record, given these circumstances. “We’ve dealt with a lot of stuff. But we’ve got a pretty good record, considering a lot of stuff,” he said.
