MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Greg Reed, the President Pro Tempore of the Alabama Senate, has announced his resignation to take on a role in Governor Kay Ivey’s administration, according to a statement released on Tuesday.
Reed will assume the position of senior adviser and will oversee a significant transformation of the Department of Labor. This change is in line with the new legislation that aims to reorganize, refocus, and rename the department as the Department of Workforce.
Governor Ivey emphasized the importance of enhancing the state’s labor force participation rate for the long-term success of Alabama. In her statement, she praised Reed for his effective representation of his district and recognized him as a valuable partner during his tenure as pro tem. “Alabama is fortunate to continue benefiting from his service,” Ivey stated.
The restructured Department of Workforce is anticipated to officially begin operations by next summer. Reed expressed his enthusiasm for this new chapter, saying, “Alabama is poised to chart a new path in workforce development and economic growth, and I am immensely grateful to Governor Kay Ivey for giving me the opportunity to be a part of her team.”
Reed’s new role will commence on January 1. As a Republican hailing from Walker County, Reed has been leading the GOP-heavy Senate since 2021. Currently, there has been no announcement regarding his successor.
Governor Ivey is expected to call for a special election to fill Reed’s Senate seat in the near future.
