LONDON — The manager of Chelsea women’s team, Sonia Bompastor, expressed her strong disapproval on Tuesday regarding the homophobic abuse directed at striker Sam Kerr and U.S. midfielder Kristie Mewis following their announcement that they are expecting a baby together.
Kerr, who captains Australia, and Mewis shared their exciting news on Monday via their Instagram accounts, showcasing images of the two and a joyous message stating, “Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” Mewis, a player with West Ham, is officially pregnant, leading to a wave of support and, unfortunately, some backlash.
Bompastor spoke at a press conference prior to Chelsea’s match against Celtic in the Women’s Champions League, stating, “It is completely unacceptable to have such comments, particularly in our society in 2024. I find it hard to comprehend how people can respond in this manner.”
She emphasized her desire to concentrate on the encouraging aspects of this announcement, offering her unwavering support to Kerr and Mewis. “We are truly proud and happy for them. This is wonderful news,” she added.
Millie Bright, the captain of the Chelsea team, also voiced her support, reinforcing that the team is united in standing by the couple. “We’re genuinely thrilled for both of them and can see the happiness this brings to their lives. We’re all here to spread joy to one another, and we won’t waste our energy on negative comments,” Bright elaborated.
At present, Kerr is dealing with a knee injury and is under contract with Chelsea until 2026, while Mewis has represented the U.S. team in 53 matches and continues to inspire many.
