Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin sidelined for a week due to a leg injury while pursuing NHL all-time goals record

Alex Ovechkin is now deemed to be on a week-to-week basis following a lower left leg injury he sustained during the Washington Capitals’ latest contest against Utah.

The Capitals announced on Tuesday that Ovechkin would require additional medical evaluations once the team returns from their ongoing road trip.

The injury occurred during a collision with Jack McBain, where the two players made contact with their shins, which has put a pause on Ovechkin’s ambitious quest to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s longstanding NHL career goals record.

Prior to his early exit from the game in Salt Lake City on Monday evening, Ovechkin had managed to score twice, bringing his total to a league-high 15 goals over the first 18 games of the season. As of now, he has accumulated 868 career goals, needing only 27 more to eclipse Gretzky’s remarkable achievement.
