Genoa parts ways with coach Gilardino and is reportedly considering Vieira as his successor.

Genoa, Italy – In a surprising move, Genoa has parted ways with coach Alberto Gilardino as of Tuesday, with early reports suggesting that Patrick Vieira is being considered as his successor. This coaching change comes at a precarious time, as Genoa currently sits just a single point above the relegation zone in Serie A, having lost half of their matches this season.

Despite the alarming statistics, Gilardino seemed to be on an upward trajectory, securing four points from the two games prior to the international break. Hints of improvement were apparent, especially as the team’s injury woes began to alleviate. However, the club’s official announcement marked the end of Gilardino’s tenure.

“Genoa CFC announces that Alberto Gilardino has been relieved of his duties,” the club informed in a concise statement. They went on to express gratitude for the achievements made together during his tenure, wishing him well in his future endeavors.

Gilardino first assumed the role of coach on an interim basis in December 2022 and subsequently was appointed permanently due to a string of successful results. He guided the team to promotion from Serie B and culminated an impressive 11th place finish in his debut season in the top division.

However, this season has been rocky, marked by the exit of star strikers Mateo Retegui and Albert Guðmundsson and compounded by a series of injuries. These challenges prompted the club to sign experienced forward Mario Balotelli recently, raising questions about how Vieira’s arrival might impact Balotelli’s role within the squad.

Interestingly, Vieira and Balotelli share a history as past teammates at both Inter Milan and Manchester City. Their relationship soured during Vieira’s tenure as coach at Nice, which ultimately led to Balotelli’s transfer to Marseille. It will be intriguing to see how they navigate their past as they potentially reunite under Vieira’s leadership.

Vieira is set to make his managerial debut for Genoa in an upcoming home match against Cagliari, a game of significant importance as both teams are currently tied on points in the league standings.

With both a coaching stint at New York City FC in Major League Soccer and managerial roles at Crystal Palace and Strasbourg after his time with Nice, Vieira brings valuable experience to Genoa’s coaching staff. His illustrious playing career is highlighted by three Premier League titles with Arsenal and four Serie A titles with Inter Milan, as well as triumphs like the World Cup and European Championship with France.
