Bayern’s Palhinha sidelined for weeks due to injury sustained during international duty with Portugal

MUNICH — The season for João Palhinha, the Bayern Munich midfielder, might be coming to an early end due to an injury sustained while representing Portugal.

Bayern Munich announced on Tuesday that Palhinha will be “sidelined for the coming weeks” after experiencing a muscle tear in his right adductor, which is located in the hip and thigh region. This injury prevented him from participating in Portugal’s 5-1 victory against Poland in the Nations League last Friday, as well as their 1-1 draw with Croatia on Monday.

As a result of this setback, Palhinha is expected to miss several challenging matches for Bayern, including a crucial home game against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League next week, a pivotal clash with Borussia Dortmund in the highly anticipated German Klassiker on November 30, and a match against the reigning champions Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup on December 3.

Reports from German news sources suggest that Palhinha is unlikely to make a return until after the winter break, with Bayern’s final match before the hiatus scheduled for December 20.

In Palhinha’s absence, Bayern may need to depend on Leon Goretzka, who has been somewhat marginal in the team this season. Meanwhile, coach Vincent Kompany is still awaiting the return of his other favored defensive midfielder, Aleksandar Pavlovic, who is recovering from surgery on a broken collarbone suffered last month. It’s reported that Pavlovic has made some progress in training with the rest of the squad, according to Bayern’s updates on Monday.
