KARTARPUR, Pakistan — On Tuesday, a significant number of Sikh devotees from India and various parts of the globe gathered at the shrine honoring Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, in Pakistan to celebrate his birth anniversary, as reported by local authorities.

A large number of Sikh sacred sites are located in Pakistan, remnants from the British partition that split the subcontinent in 1947 after over two centuries of colonial governance.

This year marks 555 years since Guru Nanak’s birth, attracting approximately 10,000 Sikh pilgrims to Pakistan for a weeklong celebration, officials highlighted. The shrine, known as Gurdwara Darbar Sahib, is the second most revered site in Sikhism and is situated by the Ravi River, just 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) from the India-Pakistan border.

While traveling between India and Pakistan typically involves stringent visa requirements, a special provision facilitates easier access for pilgrims visiting the shrine, ensuring they can attend the ceremonies without significant hurdles.

Despite having a history marked by hostilities, including two wars over the disputed Kashmir region, this occasion highlights a moment of religious significance that brings together Sikhs across borders for a peaceful celebration.
