DALLAS — In a decisive matchup on Monday night, Matt Cross and Chuck Harris each contributed 17 points and played pivotal roles in SMU’s commanding 110-69 victory over Prairie View A&M. Cross also secured 12 rebounds, showcasing his effectiveness both offensively and defensively.
The first half saw a competitive start, with Harris scoring 11 points and Cross 10, helping the Mustangs (4-1) establish a slim lead of 51-46 at halftime. On the opposing side, Prairie View A&M was kept in contention by Tanahj Pettway, who recorded 12 points, while Nick Anderson and Chauncey Gibson added 10 points each, providing key support in the opening period.
However, the second half saw a significant shift in momentum. SMU began with a strong push, scoring the first seven points, which allowed them to extend their lead to 12. By the 9:52 mark, the Mustangs had built a commanding 20-point margin, and this grew to 30 points with just 7:22 left in the game. The Mustangs reached the century mark with 3:59 remaining through a layup by Cross, bringing the score to 100-63 and pushing their lead to 37.
Throughout the game, Cross demonstrated great shooting efficiency, making 6 of 8 attempts from the field, including two successful three-pointers. Harris had a solid performance as well, converting 5 of 11 shots and hitting 3 of 5 from long range, along with making 4 of 5 free throws. Keon Ambrose-Hylton added 14 points, sinking 7 of 8 at the charity stripe, while also grabbing six rebounds. Boopie Miller contributed 13 points and recorded four assists, and Samet Yigitoglu narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
For the Panthers (1-3), Pettway stood out with a leading score of 20 points. Off the bench, Braelon Bush and Gibson added 14 and 11 points, respectively. Anderson also made his mark with 10 points and secured seven rebounds.
Looking ahead, SMU is set to host Mississippi State for their next game on Friday.
