Sam Montembeault leads Canadiens to a 3-0 victory against Oilers

MONTREAL — In an impressive display, Sam Montembeault made 30 saves, leading the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-0 victory over Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.

Brendan Gallagher, Kaiden Guhle, and Jake Evans (who scored into an empty net) were the goal scorers for Montreal, bringing the team to its longest winning streak of the season with back-to-back triumphs.

Montembeault notched his second shutout of the season, following a stellar performance in the opener where he recorded 48 saves against Toronto.

For the Oilers, Calvin Pickard stopped 22 shots. Edmonton has now lost their last two matches, having suffered a 4-3 overtime defeat to Toronto on Saturday.

Gallagher provided the first goal late in the second period, skillfully redirecting a hard pass from Mike Matheson into the top corner with just 31 seconds remaining.

In terms of performance, Montreal outshot Edmonton 11-9 during the third period and successfully killed off three power-play opportunities for Edmonton. Despite having a potent offense, the Oilers find themselves among the lower echelons of the league in power-play efficiency this season.

Notably, the Oilers were missing defenseman Darnell Nurse, who Coach Kris Knoblauch revealed would be sidelined for 5 to 10 days following a head injury caused by a hit from Toronto’s Ryan Reaves during the last game.

One of the pivotal moments of the match came when Montembeault showcased his skills, denying a partial breakaway chance from Jeff Skinner in the middle of the third period with a crucial pad save, leading to chants of “Monty! Monty!” from the crowd.

An interesting stat emerged as Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of the Oilers participated in his 900th NHL game, all with Edmonton. Drafted first overall by the franchise in 2011, he has accumulated 252 goals and 455 assists throughout his career.

Looking ahead, the Oilers will conclude their three-game road trip with a matchup against Ottawa on Tuesday, while the Canadiens are set to host the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday.
