CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte 49ers have parted ways with head coach Biff Poggi following a challenging two-year tenure that concluded with a record of 6-16.
Poggi’s departure comes in the wake of a disappointing performance against South Florida, where the team suffered a 59-24 defeat, marking their fourth loss of the season by a margin of 30 points or more. Currently, the 49ers hold a 3-7 record and have been unable to secure a victory in their last four outings, the last win occurring against East Carolina on October 6, where they triumphed 55-24.
The university has announced it will initiate a nationwide search for Poggi’s successor. In the interim, associate head coach Tim Brewster will take on the responsibilities of leading the team for the final two games of the campaign.
Charlotte’s athletic director Mike Hill expressed gratitude towards Poggi for his contributions and commitment to the student-athletes over his two seasons. Hill acknowledged Poggi’s dedication to mentoring young athletes both personally and professionally but highlighted that the team’s performance failed to meet expectations. As the program looks ahead, Hill emphasized the need for a new leader who can help elevate Charlotte 49ers football to a level of consistent bowl eligibility and competitive championship aspirations.
