LITTLE ROCK, Ark.
— Recently, a representative from Texas A&M University has been designated to take the helm of the University of Arkansas system.
On Monday, the UA Board of Trustees reached a unanimous decision to appoint retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Jay B. Silveria as the new president of Arkansas’ largest university system.
Silveria, who has held the position of associate vice president and executive director at Texas A&M University and the Bush School of Government & Public Service in Washington, D.C., is set to begin his new role on January 15, pending successful negotiations regarding his employment contract as instructed by the UA board.
With an impressive background as a command pilot, Silveria boasts over 3,900 flying hours in advanced military aircraft. He concluded his distinguished 35-year military career with the Air Force in November 2020, having served his final three years as the superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy.
“I am truly honored to take on the responsibility of leading the UA System, as I believe there is significant potential to enhance its stellar reputation and the quality of its programs,” he remarked.
Silveria will take over from President Donald Bobbitt, who is stepping down after nearly 13 years of service at the helm of the system.
The board engaged in a thorough national search process and convened special meetings in recent weeks to evaluate candidates for the position.
“The Board is very pleased with this choice, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming General Silveria and his family to Arkansas, as well as supporting him as he acclimates to our unique system and connects with the dedicated students, faculty, and staff throughout the state,” said Board Chair Kelly Eichler.
