WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is seeking close to $100 billion in emergency disaster assistance following the impacts of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, along with other recent natural disasters.
In a letter directed to House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday, Biden expressed that he has personally interacted with affected individuals, gaining insight into their needs from the federal government. “It is essential to provide additional resources to continue supporting these communities,” stated Biden.
A significant portion of the requested funds—approximately $40 billion—is designated for the primary disaster relief fund managed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Moreover, the proposal includes $24 billion intended to support farmers, with another $12 billion allocated for community development block grants under the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
In response, Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, acknowledged that Congress would thoroughly assess the request and affirmed that they will prioritize delivering the necessary support to victims of the hurricanes and others who have endured similar hardships.
