The U.S. women’s national soccer team will be missing the talented trio of Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson for their upcoming European matches due to lingering injuries.
Head coach Emma Hayes announced the 24-player roster for friendly games against England and the Netherlands, confirming that these three forwards, famously dubbed “Triple Espresso” during the Paris Olympics, will not participate.
All three players are currently engaged with their respective clubs as they have reached the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) playoffs. Rodman, for instance, is with the Washington Spirit, which is set to compete in the final against the Orlando Pride this Saturday.
In the absence of the Olympic champions, Hayes plans to utilize a younger squad to focus on future development.
The team’s matches include a confrontation with England at Wembley Stadium on November 30, followed by a game in The Hague against the Netherlands on December 3.
Reflecting on the season, Hayes described this as the culmination of an exciting year as the team continues to build toward qualifications for the next World Cup.
“This trip will be crucial for testing our capabilities against two elite international teams while also providing opportunities to enhance our roster,” she stated.
“We are committed to fostering relationships both on and off the field, and I’m eager to collaborate with this squad as we prepare for 2025.”
The upcoming roster features 15 players who participated in the Olympic squad and introduces two athletes new to international play: goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce from Manchester United and forward Ally Sentnor from the Utah Royals.
Notably, 17-year-old Lily Yohannes will also join the team; she has recently committed to representing the United States on the international level.
Although Yohannes hails from Virginia, she has lived in the Netherlands since childhood, giving her the option to represent either national team.
