HOUSTON — As of January 1, the Houston Astros’ stadium will be officially renamed Daikin Park, following a new agreement that extends through the 2039 season, as announced by the team on Monday.
Initially opened in 2000 as Enron Field, the venue’s name was changed in March 2002 after Enron Corp. filed for bankruptcy. The ballpark temporarily assumed the name Astros Field before being officially renamed Minute Maid Park in June 2002, stemming from a partnership with The Minute Maid Company, which operates as a subsidiary of The Coca-Cola Company. At that time, the agreement was intended to last 28 years and was valued at over $100 million, according to statements made by then-owner Drayton McLane.
The new partnership will be formed with Daikin Comfort Technologies North America Inc., which is a subsidiary of Daikin Industries Ltd. from Japan and is well-known as a leader in the air conditioning sector. Although the name of the stadium is changing, Minute Maid will continue to remain an affiliate of the Astros until 2029, as confirmed by the organization.
