EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — In a move aimed at addressing their five-game losing streak, the New York Giants have decided to bench their struggling quarterback, Daniel Jones, and will instead start Tommy DeVito against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. This information comes from a source familiar with the situation who requested to remain anonymous until the official announcement is made. Head coach Brian Daboll is anticipated to confirm this decision later today.
Daboll had previously suggested a switch might be forthcoming after the Giants (2-8) suffered an overtime defeat to the Carolina Panthers (3-7) in Germany on November 10 during their bye week.
The 27-year-old quarterback, Jones, has had a challenging season, throwing for 10 touchdowns but also racking up 13 interceptions, two of which occurred in the red zone during the 20-17 loss in Munich. His performance has been dismal as he now holds a record of 3-13 in his last 16 starts. The Giants currently sit at the bottom of the league in scoring, averaging just 15.6 points per game.
Jones previously signed a four-year, $160 million contract after successfully leading the Giants to the playoffs in Brian Daboll’s inaugural season in 2022. However, his performance has been hampered by injuries, including a neck issue last season that was compounded by an ACL tear.
This year, he has faced challenges behind a problematic offensive line, which has contributed to his inconsistent play. DeVito, who has been the third-string quarterback throughout the season, is now moving up the depth chart past veteran Drew Lock. DeVito, a New Jersey native and affectionately known as “Tommy Cutlets,” enjoyed some success as a rookie free agent starter from Illinois last season, managing a 3-3 record while stepping in for the injured Jones and Tyrod Taylor.
With seven games remaining in the season, there’s a possibility that Jones may not return as a starter. Furthermore, the Giants appear to be positioning themselves for a high draft pick, likely indicating they will select a quarterback in the upcoming draft.
