DHAKA, Bangladesh — On Monday, a specialized tribunal in Bangladesh is set to receive updates from law enforcement regarding efforts to apprehend former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several of her key associates, who are facing serious allegations linked to numerous fatalities during a mass uprising earlier this summer.

Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since August 5, left the country amidst unrest led by students advocating for change. On October 17, the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal issued arrest warrants against Hasina and 45 other individuals, which includes former Cabinet members, advisors, and officials from both military and civil sectors. Presently, the governance of Bangladesh is managed by an interim administration under Nobel Peace Prize recipient Muhammad Yunus.

According to B.M. Sultan Mahmud, a prosecutor involved with the tribunal, at least 14 individuals, which include a former law minister and a businessman who served as Hasina’s advisor in the private sector, are expected to attend the tribunal session on Monday. Additionally, another six individuals will be summoned on Wednesday, as per tribunal officials. Reports indicate that around 20 suspects connected to this case have already been taken into custody.

The tribunal will also inquire about the police’s recent activities regarding the apprehension of additional suspects, Hasina included. The chief prosecutor of the tribunal has requested assistance from Interpol through the national police chief to facilitate Hasina’s arrest. On Sunday, Yunus stated in a nationwide address that his administration would pursue Hasina’s extradition from India.

Officials have reported that the uprisings in July and August resulted in the deaths of hundreds, largely caused by security forces attempting to suppress initial demonstrations regarding government job allocations. As the protests escalated and transformed into a broader anti-government movement, the violence intensified significantly, contributing to the end of Hasina’s 15-year tenure in office. Hasina had previously called for an investigation into the violence that led to these numerous deaths.
