POMONA, Calif. — A single-engine plane crash on Sunday resulted in injuries to three individuals aboard the aircraft near a Southern California dragstrip, where racing enthusiasts were present for the event finals, authorities reported.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Piper PA-32 plane went down around 11:40 a.m., impacting at least two parked cars on the ground located near the dragstrip in Pomona, situated about 30 miles (50 kilometers) east of Los Angeles. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported for any spectators or personnel on the ground.
The incident occurred while the aircraft was making an apparent approach to land at Brackett Field Airport. This was confirmed in a statement from the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). Of the four individuals onboard, three were taken to the hospital for treatment, with two suffering from critical injuries, as detailed by LA County Fire Captain Sheila Kelliher-Berkoh.
Images and videos captured at the scene depicted emergency responders tending to the situation in a parking area adjacent to the racetrack, where visible damage to vehicles could be seen.
The dragstrip is currently hosting the NHRA finals, which commenced on Thursday. Although racing activities were temporarily halted to allow emergency personnel to respond, the event eventually continued later in the day.
The FAA is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
