CORAL GABLES, Fla. — In a commanding performance on Sunday, Miami triumphed over Coppin State, finishing with a score of 93-63. Matthew Cleveland led the Hurricanes, contributing 15 points, while six players finished in double figures for the team.
Cleveland displayed an impressive shooting performance, making 6 of 10 attempts, including three from beyond the arc, and grabbing seven rebounds. His efforts helped Miami advance to a 3-0 record this season.
Other key contributors for Miami included Brandon Johnson, who added 14 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Lynn Kidd also had a solid game with 12 points and five rebounds, while Divine Ugochukwu came off the bench to score 12 points, securing four rebounds and three assists. A.J. Staton-McCray contributed 11 points, Jalen Blackmon added 10, and Nijel Pack was instrumental with nine assists.
For Coppin State, which has yet to secure a win this season and now stands at 0-6, Julius Ellerbe III was the standout player, scoring 14 points. Toby Nnadozie and Khali Horton both chipped in 11 points each.
The game began strongly for Miami, where Cleveland scored 10 of his points early on, helping the team take a 43-19 lead into halftime. The Hurricanes made an impressive nine out of their 15 three-point attempts in the first half, while Coppin State struggled, missing all seven of their efforts from long range.
The second half saw Kidd begin energetically with a hook shot and a dunk following a turnover by the Eagles, extending Miami’s lead to 28 points. Although Horton made an effort to reduce the deficit with a jumper and a subsequent four-point play to bring Coppin State to within 62-40 with just over eleven minutes left, the Eagles could not reduce the gap any further.
Miami is set to face Drake in their next matchup on Thursday.
