BELGRADE, Serbia — A young woman who sustained injuries during a tragic roof collapse in Serbia earlier this month has succumbed to her injuries, increasing the total fatalities to 15, medical officials reported on Sunday.

On November 1, the concrete roof of a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad unexpectedly collapsed, crashing down upon bystanders below. Initially, the incident claimed the lives of 14 individuals, leaving three others with serious injuries.

The deadly event has sparked significant protests against the populist government, with many citizens accusing corrupt practices for the poor quality of renovation work that ultimately led to the disaster.

Originally constructed in 1964, the station had undergone two renovations in recent years, part of a collaboration with state-owned Chinese firms.

On Sunday, demonstrators in Novi Sad took to the streets, blocking an intersection close to the railway station for several hours, insisting on accountability for those responsible for the horrific incident. Activists displayed a large poster depicting a bleeding white dove and red handprints, symbolizing their message that the government has blood on its hands.

“People died due to corruption, due to your irresponsibility, and your refusal to take accountability,” yelled actress and activist Jelena Stupljanin to the gathered crowd, which responded with chants of “jail.” “We will not be silenced.”

The protesters are also calling for the release of activists detained during a prior rally in Novi Sad, which turned violent after hooded individuals hurled flares and rocks at the City Hall. Opposition groups allege that these riots were orchestrated to undermine the peaceful demonstrations.

While officials have pledged to conduct a comprehensive investigation and have seen the resignation of Serbia’s construction minister, no arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed as of yet.
