Devon Dampier guides New Mexico to victory over No. 19 Washington State, 38-35

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a thrilling finish, Devon Dampier secured a 1-yard touchdown run with just 21 seconds on the clock, leading New Mexico to a stunning 38-35 victory over No. 19 Washington State on Saturday night. This win marks New Mexico’s first triumph against a ranked opponent since 2003 and severely hampers Washington State’s chances of reaching the College Football Playoffs.

Dampier showcased an impressive performance, rushing for 192 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries while also completing 11 of 25 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Eli Sanders bolstered the Lobos’ efforts with 108 rushing yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, helping New Mexico improve to a 5-6 record.

In a game of momentum swings, Dampier was particularly effective in the second half, accumulating 142 yards and scoring both of his touchdowns during that period. His leadership guided New Mexico through a decisive 75-yard drive that culminated in the game-winning touchdown after Washington State had taken a 35-31 lead with just over three minutes left, courtesy of John Mateer’s 37-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Williams.

Mateer had a strong performance for the Cougars as well, finishing with 25 completions on 36 attempts for 375 yards and four touchdowns. Williams was a standout receiver, making nine catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns.

New Mexico momentarily took the lead late in the game at 30-28 when Luke Drzewiecki nailed a 21-yard field goal with 4:40 remaining. The Lobos rallied from a 28-14 deficit at halftime, tying the game in the third quarter with Dampier’s 33-yard touchdown rush followed by Sanders hitting paydirt with a 26-yard run.

This outcome leaves Washington State out of contention for the College Football Playoffs, whereas New Mexico keeps its hopes alive for bowl eligibility in coach Bronco Mendenhall’s inaugural season.

Poll implications suggest that the Cougars are likely to fall in rankings following their defeat.

Looking ahead, Washington State will take on Oregon State next Saturday, while New Mexico is set to face Hawaii on November 30.
