Kelley Joiner showcased an impressive performance, rushing for 140 yards and scoring two touchdowns, leading the South Florida Bulls to a dominant 59-24 victory over the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday. The Bulls’ ground game proved to be overwhelming, totaling an impressive 425 yards and six touchdowns during the matchup.
South Florida improved their record to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the American Athletic Conference, while also capitalizing on Charlotte’s mistakes by forcing four turnovers throughout the game.
The game began with Charlotte taking an early lead as Cartevious Norton completed a 73-yard, 12-play drive with a six-yard touchdown run. This gave the 49ers a 7-0 advantage in the first quarter. South Florida quickly responded when Ta’Ron Keith tied the game with a 16-yard touchdown run. However, Charlotte regained the lead when Stephen Rusnak successfully kicked a 50-yard field goal with just under nine minutes left in the first half.
South Florida then took control of the game, with Nay’Quan Wright scoring on a six-yard run followed by Joiner executing a 54-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 21-10. Charlotte’s Norton scored another touchdown from the two-yard mark, closing the gap to 21-17, yet the Bulls countered with a powerful surge, scoring 24 consecutive points.
Wright found the end zone once more with another six-yard run, and John Cannon added to the tally with a 33-yard field goal. Brent Austin intercepted a pass and returned it for a 14-yard touchdown, followed by Mac Harris recovering a fumble from Charlotte and returning it 25 yards for another touchdown, making the score 45-17 by the end of the third quarter.
Charlotte managed to score again as Deshawn Purdie connected with Isaiah Myers for a 15-yard touchdown. However, Joiner responded with a dazzling 45-yard touchdown run, and Alvon Isaac capped off the scoring with a nine-yard run for South Florida’s final touchdown of the game.
On the quarterback front, Bryce Archie completed 11 of 16 passes for 126 yards and added 72 rushing yards on six carries. For Charlotte, Purdie completed 17 of 29 throws for 256 yards, recording one touchdown pass but also facing two interceptions. His top target, Myers, caught four passes for a total of 82 yards.
