No. 14 Creighton secures another dominant victory, defeating Kansas City 79-56

OMAHA, Neb. — In a dominating performance, freshman Jackson McAndrew contributed 15 points from the bench, while Ryan Kalkbrenner delivered an impressive 14 points along with 12 rebounds to help No. 14 Creighton achieve a solid victory over Kansas City, finishing the game at 79-56 on Saturday night.

Isaac Traudt also made his mark with 13 points, Steven Ashworth added 11, and transfer from Arizona State, Jamiya Neal, recorded his first double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for Creighton. Three players, McAndrew, Traudt, and Ashworth, each sank three shots from beyond the arc, showcasing the Bluejays’ deep shooting strength as they improved to an unblemished 4-0 record this season, winning their initial four games by an impressive average margin of 24.3 points.

On the Kansas City side, Jamar Brown recorded 12 points and a career-best 16 rebounds, marking the highest rebounding total for any player from Kansas City in the last two years. Additional contributions came from Jayson Petty with 12 points and Cameron Faas adding 10 to the scoreboard.

Looking at the overall performance, Kansas City faced a tough challenge as they had just been defeated by No. 7 Iowa State with a score of 82-56 earlier in the week. This marked the first instance in the program’s history that they confronted back-to-back ranked opponents. Consequently, the upcoming schedule looks to offer a more favorable set of games for the team predicted to win the Summit League preseason.

Creighton, after their early season success, is poised to face significantly tougher competition soon, with matchups against in-state rival Nebraska, No. 23 Texas A&M, and No. 1 Kansas coming up in the next 18 days.

A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Traudt sank three 3-pointers late in the first half, extending the Bluejays’ lead to 46-25, just after Kansas City had managed to cut down a 12-point deficit.

Statistically, Kansas City struggled significantly with their shooting, achieving only 29.3% from the field, which reflects their worst shooting performance since they recorded 29.1% against Loyola-Chicago back in November 2017.

Looking ahead, Kansas City will prepare for a home game against Calvary University on Monday, while Creighton is set to host Nebraska on Friday, eyeing to secure their 12th victory over the Cornhuskers in their last 14 encounters.
