NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt continued its impressive start to the season with a 94-81 victory over Jackson State on Saturday, driven by solid performances from Jason Edwards and Tyler Nickel, who contributed 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The Commodores displayed well-rounded scoring, as AJ Hoggard added 13 points, while Jaylen Carey and Devin McGlockton scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Notably, Vanderbilt had a total of nine players scoring during the game. Although they were outmatched on the boards, getting outrebounded 43-32, their shooting from beyond the arc was a game-changer, making 16 of 38 three-point attempts, compared to Jackson State’s 7 of 19.
For Jackson State, which is struggling this season with an 0-4 record, Shannon Grant and Marcus Watson Jr. each produced 16 points, while Jayme Mitchell Jr. and Dorian McMillan chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively. This marks another challenging start for Jackson State as they have now lost their last four games for the seventh consecutive season.
The game began with Vanderbilt establishing dominance early, jumping to a 9-0 lead. Although Jackson State made a comeback to narrow the gap to 18-17, Vanderbilt responded with a strong performance, including consecutive layups from MJ Collins Jr. that set them ahead 47-34. The Commodores maintained their lead, staying comfortably ahead for the rest of the game.
Through the first four games of the season, Vanderbilt is averaging an impressive 91.5 points per game, marking their first 4-0 start since the 2018-19 season, a year in which they faced significant struggles in the SEC.
