Gyokeres propels Sweden to Nations League victory as the Netherlands advances to knockout stages

Viktor Gyokeres was instrumental in Sweden’s 2-1 victory over Slovakia, while the Netherlands secured their spot in the Nations League quarterfinals with an impressive 4-0 win against Hungary on Saturday.

Germany also made headlines by establishing a single-game scoring record in this relatively new competition, dominating Bosnia and Herzegovina with a staggering 7-0 scoreline.

Gyokeres opened the scoring for Sweden, and although Slovakia managed to equalize, the Sporting Lisbon forward assisted Aleksander Isak, who netted the decisive goal for Sweden, ensuring they held the lead until the end.

With this performance, Gyokeres stands as one of the top scorers in the Nations League alongside Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Slovenia’s Benjamin Sesko, each with five goals.
Notably, Gyokeres recently overshadowed Erling Haaland by netting a hat trick during a Champions League match where Sporting triumphed over Manchester City 4-1.

Sweden aims to move up from League C to League B in this competition.

In addition, the Netherlands has joined Germany as the two teams from League A, Group 3 to qualify for the quarterfinals, which will take place in March.

The Dutch team’s victory in Amsterdam was momentarily interrupted as the game had to be paused for the medical emergency involving Hungary assistant coach Adam Szalai. Fortunately, the Hungarian Football Federation confirmed that the former player was in a “stable” condition after being transported to a nearby hospital.
