Vienna celebrated the beginning of the festive season on Saturday evening with a spectacular display as a grand Christmas tree was illuminated at the town hall square. The excitement in the air was palpable as the crowd gasped in delight during the ceremonial lighting of the majestic tree, which is approximately 30 meters, or about 100 feet, tall.
As attendees savored the holiday spirit, mulled wine flowed freely, and delicious frosted gingerbread cookies hung enticingly from vendor stalls. Children enjoyed the festive atmosphere as they took turns riding a charming carousel while a brass band played the iconic Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss II, enhancing the joyful scene.
The highlight of the evening came when Vienna’s Mayor, Michael Ludwig, participated in the ceremonial illumination of the enormous spruce tree, which shone brightly along with the beautifully lit town hall. This year’s tree was particularly impressive, adorned with 2,000 LED lights and 1,000 vibrant Christmas baubles, attracting visitors during the bustling holiday marketplace that was frequented by 3.3 million guests in the previous year.
The Christmas market at town hall is among more than a dozen such markets spread throughout the city. Another popular market located at Schönbrunn Castle saw a warm reception, welcoming 50,000 visitors on its opening weekend. Christmas markets are a cherished tradition, especially in German-speaking nations like Austria.
Most of Vienna’s Christmas markets will remain open until December 26. However, the markets situated at the town hall and Schönbrunn Castle will delight visitors even longer, staying open until January 6 of the following year, providing ample opportunity for holiday revelry.
