KINGSTON, R.I. — In a thrilling comeback, Malik Grant scored three touchdowns in the second half to lead Rhode Island to a 20-17 victory over Albany on Saturday. The Rams, who improved to 9-2 with a 6-1 record in the Coastal Athletic Association, faced a daunting 17-0 deficit at halftime against the Great Danes, who fell to 3-8 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Grant’s impressive performance featured touchdown runs of 42, 3, and 7 yards. His final score came with just over nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, energizing the team and the fans.

Albany found itself in a favorable position to reclaim the lead late in the game. Following a 23-yard punt return by Jacari Carter, the Great Danes started their final drive at the Rhode Island 24-yard line with just 1:27 on the clock. However, the momentum shifted when they faced a critical third-and-18 at the Rhode Island 19. Instead of attempting a risky pass, they opted for a field goal. Unfortunately for Albany, John Opalko’s 36-yard attempt was blocked by Wesley Neal Jr.

Earlier, Albany’s chance to extend their lead was snuffed out when a pass from Weber was intercepted by Andre Depina-Gray at the 3-yard line, halting what could have been a game-changing drive.

On the ground, Grant led the Rams with 100 yards on 25 carries. Quarterback Hunter Helms contributed significantly through the air, amassing 248 passing yards but throwing two interceptions in the process.

For Albany, Van Weber completed 31 of his 51 passes for a total of 354 yards, tossing two touchdowns along the way. However, like Helms, he was also intercepted twice, which proved costly. Levi Wentz was a standout receiver, catching nine passes for 138 yards.
