U.S. midfielder Johnny Cardoso sidelined for Jamaica rematch due to left hamstring strain

ST. LOUIS — Midfielder Johnny Cardoso will be sidelined for the second leg of the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal against Jamaica, which is scheduled for Tuesday. This comes after he suffered a strain to his left hamstring during the first match against Jamaica, where the United States secured a 1-0 victory.

The 23-year-old athlete sustained the injury early in the first half and was substituted in the 21st minute by Malik Tillman. Despite being replaced, Cardoso played a role in setting up the game’s sole goal, as his pass to Christian Pulisic contributed to Ricardo Pepi’s strike in the fifth minute.

Reports indicate that Cardoso will return to Spain’s Real Betis and will not be replaced in the national squad. This developmental phase is crucial as the remaining players gear up for the second leg of the total-goal series.

The outcome of this matchup will determine who progresses to the semifinals on March 20, taking place in Inglewood, California. The United States has a strong history in this tournament, having claimed victory in its first three editions.

On a more positive note, winger Tim Weah will be eligible to play on Tuesday after serving a two-match suspension. This suspension resulted from an incident where he struck Panama defender Roderick Miller during a Copa America match in June. Additionally, midfielder Brenden Aaronson will also join the squad after missing the trip to Jamaica due to flu-like symptoms.
