HAMPTON, Va. — In a thrilling matchup, Zach Palmer-Smith showcased his talents with an impressive performance, rushing for 166 yards and scoring two touchdowns, helping Richmond secure a 24-21 victory over Hampton. This win marks the Spiders’ ninth consecutive triumph and ensures they at least share the Coastal Athletic Association title.
With this victory, the Spiders improve their record to 9-2 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 7-0. Currently ranked seventh in the FCS coaches poll, Richmond is set to host William & Mary in their regular-season finale next Saturday. The win against the Pirates (5-6, 2-5) also signifies the Spiders’ longest regular-season winning streak since 1998, matching the nine-game streak they achieved that year. Their last defeat in the league came earlier in the season against Hampton.
Palmer-Smith’s pivotal second touchdown came during a crucial 75-yard drive, allowing Richmond to extend their lead to 24-14 late in the third quarter. The Pirates responded when Malcolm Mays rushed for a tying 1-yard touchdown with only 10 minutes left on the clock. However, the Pirates’ hopes of a comeback were dashed as their final drive stalled in the closing minute at the Richmond 38-yard line, following a significant 10-yard sack by Carsen Stocklinski, which led to an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Earlier in the game, Palmer-Smith initiated the scoring with a 3-yard TD that capped another 75-yard drive, putting the Spiders on the board first. In addition, Camden Coleman contributed to the victory by passing for 138 yards, including a touchdown pass to Landon Ellis. The Spiders now look forward to their upcoming challenge as they continue to push for conference supremacy.
