SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In a thrilling matchup, Anthony Edwards powered the Minnesota Timberwolves to a narrow 130-126 victory over the Sacramento Kings in overtime on Friday night, despite a staggering 60-point performance from De’Aaron Fox, setting a new franchise record.

Fox showcased his scoring prowess with 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime; however, his efforts fell short as the Kings were missing key players DeMar DeRozan, who was sidelined with lower back tightness, and Malik Monk due to an ankle injury. The turning point came when Julius Randle netted a crucial driving layup with less than a minute remaining, giving the Timberwolves a two-point lead.

The Timberwolves demonstrated remarkable poise in the extra period, successfully converting their first four attempts, including five consecutive points from Edwards after Fox had initially opened overtime with a three-pointer. Randle contributed significantly as well, finishing the game with 26 points, while Naz Reid added 16 points for Minnesota. Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis also had a solid outing, recording 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Minnesota, which had surged to a 20-point advantage, experienced a shaky second half as the Kings embarked on a 14-0 run to start the fourth quarter, bringing the home crowd to life. Fox had an impressive 21 points in the first half, leading the Timberwolves to a 62-54 lead at halftime.

Takeaways from the game highlighted the Timberwolves’ depth, with seven players, including all five starters, scoring in double figures. This balanced offense proved crucial in maintaining composure despite Sacramento’s late-game surge. On the other hand, the Kings struggled to fill the void left by DeRozan, even with Fox’s historic outing.

A critical moment occurred when Fox missed a floater that could have tied the game following Randle’s layup. Edwards seized the rebound and extended the Timberwolves’ lead with a long two-pointer, cementing their advantage with just 14.1 seconds remaining.

In terms of statistics, Fox’s remarkable performance marked the first 50-point game for the Kings since DeMarcus Cousins scored 56 points in 2016. The previous franchise record for individual scoring was held by Jack Twyman, who scored 59 points for the Cincinnati Royals back in 1960.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves will host the Suns on Sunday, while the Kings will face the Jazz on Saturday.
