Shai Gilgeous-Alexander nets 28 points as Thunder triumph over Suns 99-83 in NBA Cup clash

OKLAHOMA CITY — In an NBA Cup matchup on Friday night, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander poured in 28 points, leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 99-83 victory over a shorthanded Phoenix Suns team.

Lu Dort made significant contributions with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Jalen Williams added 14 points along with eight rebounds. Isaiah Joe also played a key role, scoring 11 points, which collectively helped the Thunder improve their record to 11-2.

Oklahoma City showcased dominance, building a substantial 25-point lead during the second half, marking their third consecutive win in the absence of injured center Chet Holmgren.

For the Suns, Josh Okogie was one of the standout performers, contributing 15 points and nine rebounds. However, Phoenix faced challenges as they were once again without star players Kevin Durant, Bradley Beal, and Grayson Allen. Devin Booker, although he added 12 points, struggled with his shooting, missing his first six attempts and ultimately going 2 for 10 from the field, leading to a team record of 9-4.

Holmgren’s injury has been significant for Oklahoma City, as he will be sidelined for at least eight weeks due to a pelvic fracture he suffered in a tough fall during last Sunday’s game against Golden State.

One pivotal moment in the game occurred when Oklahoma City held an 18-point lead at 43-25 midway through the second quarter. Phoenix, however, fought back, scoring 11 of the next 13 points, narrowing the gap to 45-36, but that was as close as they would get.

Another key aspect of the game was Oklahoma City’s dominance on the boards. They finished the night with 53 rebounds, compared to Phoenix’s 50.

Looking ahead, the Suns will take on the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday, while the Thunder are set to host the Dallas Mavericks later that evening.
