PISCATAWAY, N.J. — In an impressive display on Friday night, Rutgers, ranked 24th, triumphed over Monmouth with a score of 98-81, thanks in large part to standout performances from freshmen Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey. Harper, who has consistently scored at least 20 points in every game this season, led the Scarlet Knights with 20 points, alongside contributing five rebounds and six assists. Meanwhile, Bailey made his mark in his college debut by scoring 17 points, which included an early 3-pointer from the corner, and further adding six rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot in his 30 minutes on the court after missing the previous two games due to a “basketball injury,” as stated by head coach Steve Pikiell.
In addition to the freshmen’s contributions, Zach Martini also made a solid impact by scoring 18 points, while Lathan Sommerville chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds. On the opposing side, Monmouth struggled despite a standout performance from Abdi Bashir Jr., who reached a career-high scoring 38 points and shooting 10 of 17 from beyond the arc. Madison Durr supported the effort with 17 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Rutgers.
Rutgers maintained control of the game, never falling behind. The team excelled with a 61% shooting accuracy from the field, making 30 of their 52 attempts. They also demonstrated prowess from the three-point line, sinking 11 of their 20 attempts, and were effective at the free-throw line, converting 25 of 32 shots.
Observations from the game revealed that Monmouth is experiencing a difficult season, with an average loss margin of 21 points. Conversely, Rutgers has been formidable against mid-major teams, boasting an impressive 63-7 record in nonconference home games since the 2016-17 season under Pikiell’s leadership.
A noteworthy moment in the match came when Ace Bailey executed an impressive alley-oop dunk following a turnover, extending Rutgers’ lead to 42-25 and energizing the crowd.
Looking ahead, Monmouth will face Wichita State on Monday night, while Rutgers is set to host Merrimack on Wednesday evening. The Scarlet Knights will aim to continue their strong start to the season as they build momentum.
