Teresa Weatherspoon has been named as one of the six coaches in the newly established Unrivaled 3-on-3 league.
Alongside her, other coaches announced include former Lakers assistant Phil Handy, Adam Harrington, Nola Henry, DJ Sackmann, and Andrew Wade. This innovative league was co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart and aims to provide players with a homegrown opportunity to remain in the United States during the offseason.
The inaugural games are set to commence on January 17 and will take place in Miami. Nearly all of the league’s players have been announced, and efforts are ongoing to recruit the WNBA Rookie of the Year, Caitlin Clark, to join the competition.
Weatherspoon, a Naismith Hall of Famer, previously experienced a short tenure with the Chicago Sky before being let go after just one season. She also has a background as a player development coach and an assistant coach with the New Orleans Pelicans. The emphasis of this new league is on hiring coaches with a robust player development focus.
In addition, the league has secured a multiyear collaboration with TNT and its associated sports platforms, committing to telecast over 45 games. Viewers can expect to see matchups on three nights each week, featuring games on TNT every Monday and Friday, with additional broadcasts on truTV each Saturday.
The drafting of teams will see the coaches select from a pool of 36 players organized into six specific groups, with the classifications being wings, forwards, and guards. An interesting element of the draft is that coaches will not know which team they will lead until the selection process is finalized.
The participating teams in the league include the Laces Basketball Club, Mist Basketball Club, Phantom Basketball Club, Lunar Owls Basketball Club, Rose Basketball Club, and Vinyl Basketball Club.
Details regarding team assignments for each coach, along with the player rosters and game schedules, are anticipated to be released on Wednesday.
The league boasts a total salary pool exceeding $8 million for the 36 players, with the added incentive of providing players with equity stakes in the venture.
