JAKARTA, Indonesia — In a decisive match on Friday, Japan comprehensively defeated Indonesia with a score of 4-0, allowing them to establish a seven-point lead at the summit of Group C in the third round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
This victory, featuring two goals in each half, keeps Japan on track for their eighth consecutive appearance at the World Cup.
Despite the home team starting off with enthusiasm in front of a raucous crowd of 78,000 at the sold-out Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when, after 35 minutes, Daichi Kamada made a powerful run down the left flank. He delivered a cross that was unfortunately turned into an own goal by defender Justin Hubner, dampening the spirits of the home supporters.
Shortly before halftime, Takumi Minamino further extended Japan’s lead by scoring from close range, capitalizing on a well-placed pass from Kaoru Mitoma, thus leaving the score at 2-0 at the break.
In the second half, Hidemasa Motira exploited a poor pass from Indonesia’s goalkeeper, converting the error into a third goal for Japan early in the half. Yukinari Sugawara then put the finishing touch on the match, scoring Japan’s fourth goal in the 69th minute.
With this victory, Japan now leads the group with 13 points after five matches played. Following them, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and China are all tied with six points each, while Bahrain has five points and Indonesia is trailing with three points.
The qualification format ensures that the top two teams from each of the three groups will secure a place in the World Cup, while the teams finishing in third and fourth place will move on to the next qualifying stage.
