Connor McDavid achieved a remarkable milestone on Thursday night, scoring early in the second period to become the fourth-fastest player in NHL history to accumulate 1,000 points. He played a crucial role in the Edmonton Oilers’ thrilling 3-2 overtime win against the Nashville Predators, also providing an assist on Darnell Nurse’s game-winning goal.
The pivotal goal for McDavid came after he received a pass from teammate Leon Draisaitl during a 2-on-1 rush. He skillfully maneuvered past goalie Scott Wedgewood, finding the net with a precise shot to the near post that leveled the score at 1.
At just 27 years old, McDavid reached this significant milestone in his 659th game, placing him behind only Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Mike Bossy in terms of speed to 1,000 points. The legendary Gretzky set the record with just 424 games, while Lemieux reached it in 513, and Bossy in 656 games. Notably, McDavid’s career statistics now include 341 goals and 659 assists, making him the 99th player in NHL history to achieve 1,000 points.
The Oilers took the lead at 5:30 into the second period when Nurse scored his first goal of the season. The Predators’ Calvin Pickard, who faced 21 shots on goal, found himself under pressure as Nashville’s Cole Smith equalized late in regulation with a breakaway goal, bringing the score to 2-2 with just 1:48 left to play.
Earlier in the game, Michael McCarron had opened the scoring for Nashville with a goal at 8:22 in the first period. The Predators were coming off a tough start to their five-game road trip, having fallen to the Colorado Avalanche in a 3-2 overtime defeat.
Looking ahead, the Predators are set for back-to-back games in Alberta, continuing with a matchup against Calgary on Friday night after Thursday’s challenge against Edmonton. Meanwhile, the Oilers will travel to Toronto for their next game, marking the beginning of a three-game road trip.
