PHILADELPHIA — In an intense matchup on Thursday night, Saquon Barkley showcased his impressive running skills by amassing 146 yards and scoring two crucial fourth-quarter touchdowns, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 26-18 victory over the Washington Commanders, guided by quarterback Jayden Daniels. This win allowed the Eagles to solidify their position at the top of the NFC East, improving their record to 8-2 and marking their sixth consecutive victory since returning from a bye week, although the game was filled with moments of tension.
A significant turning point occurred in the second quarter when Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts took a hard hit from linebacker Frankie Luvu, leading to a concerning moment as Hurts hit the turf. After rolling onto his stomach and clutching his helmet, he was briefly evaluated in the medical tent. Despite the scare, Hurts returned to the game and recorded an impressive 221 yards through the air.
As the game progressed into the fourth quarter with the Eagles holding a slim 12-10 lead, the Commanders had a chance to take control. Coach Dan Quinn decided to go for it on a pivotal fourth down instead of playing it safe with a field goal. However, Daniels was unable to gain the necessary yardage after scrambling, and with just under three minutes left in the contest, Barkley broke free for a spectacular 23-yard touchdown run. Jake Elliott successfully converted the extra point following a shaky start earlier in the game, where he had missed both a previous attempt and two out of four field goals.
Following Barkley’s touchdown, Daniels, who completed 22 of 32 passes for 191 yards and a late touchdown, was intercepted by safety Reed Blankenship on the very next play. Just 12 seconds later, Barkley struck again, this time with a stunning 39-yard touchdown run that sealed the fate of the Commanders, who fell to a record of 7-4 after their second consecutive defeat. Washington had hoped to claim first place in the division but walked away disappointed after the loss.
