HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — In a thrilling conclusion, Byron Ireland scored 15 points for Nicholls State, including a dramatic last-second shot that secured a 61-59 win over Northern Kentucky on Thursday night.
With only 8.5 seconds remaining, Ike Cornish snagged a rebound from a missed shot by the Norse and was quick to pass the ball to Ireland. Demonstrating impressive speed, Ireland drove down the court, maneuvering into the lane, and launched a contested floater that found its mark just before the final buzzer.
Despite facing some struggles from the field, Ireland finished the night shooting 5 for 18 and went 1 for 4 from beyond the arc. He also made 4 of his 6 free throw attempts for the Colonels, who improved to a record of 2-2 this season. Cornish complemented Ireland’s performance with 12 points, shooting 4 of 12 overall and hitting 3 of 7 from three-point territory. He also contributed with seven rebounds and three steals. Robert Brown III supported the team with 11 points, going 4 of 13 from the field and connecting on 3 of 9 of his three-point attempts.
On the other side, Trey Robinson was the standout for Northern Kentucky (0-3), leading his team with 19 points along with seven rebounds, four assists, and three blocks. Josh Dilling contributed significantly, adding 18 points and recorded two steals, while Keeyan Itejere chipped in with nine points and three blocks to help the Norse’s effort.
