TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — In an impressive display of teamwork and skill, the Alabama women’s basketball team secured a commanding 88-59 victory over Alcorn State on Thursday night. Essence Cody led the way for Alabama, contributing 18 points and pulling down eight rebounds, while Aaliyah Nye added 17 points to the team’s overall tally.
Eris Lester made a significant impact off the bench, scoring 15 points, and Sarah Ashlee Barker also contributed with 14 points. This victory brings Alabama’s record to 5-0 for the season, bolstered by a previous win against Norfolk State, which they overcame 68-58 just a day prior.
Showing resilience and power, Alabama ended the first half on an impressive 20-2 surge, featuring seven points each from Cody and Barker, which advanced their lead to a decisive 46-21. Alcorn State struggled during the latter portion of the game, failing to score on eight consecutive attempts during the third quarter, resulting in a daunting 27-point deficit.
In the first half, Cody made a significant impact with 14 points, while both Barker and Nye chipped in with 11 apiece. Alabama demonstrated their shooting prowess by making 5 out of 14 attempts from beyond the arc. In contrast, Alcorn State struggled, hitting just 7 of 27 shots from the field, equating to a 26% accuracy rate.
For Alcorn State, Destiny Brown managed to score 12 points, and Nakia Cheathman was notable for her presence in the paint, grabbing 15 rebounds along with nine points. With a current season record of 1-3, Alcorn State aims to rally in future matchups.
Looking ahead, Alabama will face off against UL Monroe, Alabama State, and Georgia State before their first challenge against a Power Four opponent, California, on December 5, as part of the SEC/ACC Challenge.
