COLUMBIA, S.C. — In an impressive display, MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 23 points while Chloe Kitts contributed 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading the top-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks to a commanding 92-60 victory over Coppin State on Thursday evening.

The Gamecocks, now boasting a record of 3-0, commenced their home season by unveiling their national championship banner, celebrating last year’s perfect 38-0 title run. They quickly shifted gears to maintain their unbeaten record at the start of this season.

Kitts, who sat out the previous game against No. 13 NC State due to academic obligations, achieved her second double-double of this season. Fulwiley showcased her shooting prowess by sinking four of the team’s ten 3-pointers, contributing to South Carolina’s impressive streak of 60 consecutive home wins.

For the Eagles (2-2), Laila Lawrence led the scoring with 20 points.

Observations:

Despite their efforts, Coppin State is facing a steep learning curve this season. They are scheduled to engage with six teams from major conferences, including three ranked squads, marking the second consecutive year they have faced the reigning national champion, having previously lost to the 2023 champions LSU.

The Gamecocks appeared to take some time to find their groove but ultimately succeeded in extending their record-setting home winning streak. South Carolina hasn’t experienced a loss at home since December 3, 2020, when they were narrowly defeated by NC State, 54-46.

Turning point:

Coppin State managed to seize a brief 16-13 lead thanks to Lawrence’s 3-pointer with just over two minutes left in the first quarter. However, South Carolina responded with a powerful 10-0 run to close out the quarter, then continued to build their lead in the second quarter, reaching an 18-point advantage following Bree Hall’s 3-pointer.

Highlight statistic:

As is characteristic of their play, South Carolina dominated the boards, out-rebounding Coppin State by a stunning margin of 51 to 23.

Looking ahead:

Coppin State will travel to Virginia Tech for their next game on Saturday, while South Carolina will host East Carolina on Sunday.
